30 Places to Visit in Los Angeles and Nearby Day Trips

Los Angeles is easier to enjoy when you stop zigzagging across it. Pick a few places in the same area, leave time for a meal and let the traffic forecast shape the day. These 30 ideas include city stops, nearby beaches and a longer day out in Anaheim.

Use the list to build your own shortlist. Opening hours, tickets and access can change, so open the attraction’s visitor page before booking. The photos come from the earlier guide and show the places, not today’s crowds or conditions.

1. Pacific Park and Santa Monica Pier

A pier walk and an ocean view can be enough reason to come here. Add rides if they suit your group, rather than buying a pass automatically. Our Pacific Park guide separates the park’s rides from the other things to do around the pier.

2. Disneyland Resort, Anaheim

Give Disneyland its own Anaheim day. Trying to squeeze it between Los Angeles stops leaves little room for the rides you came for. Decide which park you want, read the ticket and reservation requirements, and include transport in the budget.

3. Venice Canals

The Venice Canals make a quieter break from the beach area. Take a short walk, enjoy the setting and remember that these are residential streets. Keep to public paths and leave people’s doorways clear. This fits naturally with a Westside day.

4. Universal Studios Hollywood

Universal is a day to plan around the attractions your group actually wants. Start with the current ride and studio-tour lineup, then choose tickets. Weekends and school holidays can be busy, so don’t build the day around getting straight onto every ride.

5. Hollywood Sign viewpoints

You can enjoy seeing the Hollywood Sign without trying to reach the letters. Choose a legal viewpoint or a designated hiking route that suits your time and fitness. For a walk, bring water and look at the heat and daylight before setting off.

6. The Getty Center

At the Getty Center, leave time for the building and outdoor views as well as the art. The tram from the arrival area is part of getting there, so don’t arrive with only a few minutes to spare. Pick a few galleries and check reservation and parking arrangements.

7. Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA)

LACMA can anchor a day around the Miracle Mile museums. Start with the exhibitions that interest you and see which spaces are open in the museum’s visitor information. The Petersen nearby is an easy addition if you want more than one museum.

8. California Science Center

The California Science Center is an option for a day built around science exhibits. If Endeavour is the main reason you want to go, read the display and access updates on the official website first. An older photo isn’t a reliable opening notice.

9. Rodeo Drive

You can walk Rodeo Drive without shopping at its luxury stores. Decide whether you want a brief look at the storefronts or a longer shopping visit, then give it that amount of time. For a short stop, parking costs can be a surprisingly large part of the outing.

10. Zuma Beach

Zuma is a Malibu beach day, not a quick hop from every part of LA. Leave room for the coastal drive and stay nearby for the rest of the outing. At the beach, use designated access and follow the ocean conditions and lifeguard instructions.

11. Walt Disney Concert Hall

The concert hall is worth considering for its architecture even if you aren’t seeing a performance. A concert needs its own ticket and timing; a tour or public visit has separate arrangements. Pair it with The Broad to make the most of being downtown.

12. Dodger Stadium

Choose what you want from Dodger Stadium: the atmosphere of a game or a scheduled tour. Then build the travel plan around that choice. Arrival and departure can take time, so a tightly timed booking immediately afterwards is likely to feel rushed.

13. A Pacific Coast Highway drive

Pick a stretch of coast instead of trying to drive the whole Pacific Coast Highway. A few unhurried stops are more enjoyable than watching the clock at every viewpoint. Look at Caltrans QuickMap before leaving, since closures can change the route.

14. Santa Monica State Beach

Santa Monica State Beach works as a day on its own or a slower hour after the pier. Think about the walk from parking to the sand and bring what you need for sun and wind. Read the posted ocean conditions before deciding to swim.

15. The Huntington

Give The Huntington enough time for the gardens or collections you most want to see. Trying to cover everything can turn a lovely setting into a long march. Public exhibitions and research-library access are separate, so plan from the visitor information and ticket requirements.

16. Hollywood Walk of Fame

The Walk of Fame is part of a busy street, not an attraction with one entrance. Pick a stretch of Hollywood Boulevard and take your time looking for names. If you want a photo with a costumed performer, settle any expected payment before posing.

17. Mulholland Drive

A short section of Mulholland Drive can give you a different view of the city. Choose legal viewpoints and places to park instead of stopping wherever the view opens up. Allow for access changes rather than treating the whole road as one fixed tourist route.

18. A live comedy show

A comedy show is a good reason to spend the evening in one neighbourhood. Choose the lineup and venue, then look at age rules, ticket terms and any minimum purchase. Eating nearby saves another cross-city journey before the show.

19. The Broad

The Broad is a useful downtown choice if contemporary art interests you. Start with the works or exhibition you want to see, then read the reservation details. Some installations or exhibitions can have separate arrangements from general entry.

20. Runyon Canyon Park

Runyon Canyon is the outdoor option to plan around the temperature, not just the distance. An exposed path feels very different on a hot afternoon. Pick a suitable route, bring water and leave enough daylight for the walk back.

21. Griffith Observatory

Griffith Observatory combines city views with astronomy exhibits. If sunset is your priority, leave time for getting uphill and finding your way back afterwards. Building access and planetarium shows have their own schedules. This is the viewpoint to consider in place of the closed OUE Skyspace.

22. The Original Farmers Market

At the Original Farmers Market, have a look around before settling on a stall. It’s an easy place to fit a meal into a nearby shopping or museum day. Individual businesses keep their own hours, and parking validation is something to read before paying.

23. TCL Chinese Theatre

You can make the Chinese Theatre a short forecourt stop or book a film or tour for a fuller visit. Those are different plans, especially around premieres and events. Pair it with your Hollywood Boulevard walk and leave entrances clear while taking photos.

24. Petersen Automotive Museum

The Petersen is the museum on this list for people who enjoy cars and their design stories. Choose the exhibitions you care about and see whether extra experiences need separate tickets. If you add LACMA, give each enough time to be more than a quick photo stop.

25. Sunset Boulevard

Pick a section of Sunset Boulevard, because the whole road doesn’t feel like the Sunset Strip. Go for a specific restaurant, music venue or daytime drive. For a night out, work out the journey home before you start moving between places.

26. Third Street Promenade

Third Street Promenade fits easily into a Santa Monica day when you want a meal, some shopping or a change from the beach. Choose it for the convenience of the location. An old list of shops may not match the businesses there now.

27. Descanso Gardens

Descanso Gardens is a day for slowing down outdoors in La Cañada Flintridge. Look at the seasonal displays before choosing a date, and treat evening events as separate bookings where required. Comfortable shoes help if you plan to spend a few hours wandering.

28. Watts Towers

Watts Towers is a stop for art and architecture. Before making the journey, find out whether a tour or guided area is available on your date. An exterior look and a guided visit offer different experiences, and the surrounding streets are a residential neighbourhood.

29. Japanese American National Museum

For the Japanese American National Museum, sort out access before making a special trip to Little Tokyo. Its renovation notice describes a Pavilion closure with programs continuing elsewhere. Find the actual location of the exhibition or event you want to attend.

30. Hollywood Forever Cemetery

Hollywood Forever is both a historic place and an active cemetery. Visit quietly, keep away from private services and follow the visitor rules. Public events have separate tickets and schedules, so decide whether you’re coming for the grounds or a particular event.

How to turn the list into a trip

Westside day: choose Santa Monica Pier, the beach and either the canals or a nearby meal. Central museums day: compare LACMA and the Petersen, checking current exhibitions. Downtown day: consider The Broad and Walt Disney Concert Hall, with Little Tokyo only if its current activities fit your interests.

Keep Disneyland or a longer Malibu outing on a separate day if you can. For the rest, look at travel time when you actually plan to leave, not an empty-road estimate. Two places you enjoy are better than five you barely reach.
