Standing in front of a shelf of Maxim boxes, it’s easy to mix up the names. Original, Mocha Gold Mild, White Gold and Arabica 100 are different products. Before choosing a flavour, work out whether you want a sweetened coffee mix or plain instant coffee.
The taste notes here are personal preferences. For ingredients, serving size and caffeine, use the label on the box you’re buying. Similar names or packaging don’t guarantee the same recipe in every market.
Mocha Gold Mild: sweet, creamy coffee mix
Mocha Gold Mild is where I would start if you like your coffee sweet and creamy. Everything is portioned into one stick, which is convenient at work or when you don’t want to measure separate ingredients. You give up some control over how much coffee, sugar and creamer goes into the cup.
Start with the water quantity on your packet, stir thoroughly, then add a little more water if it tastes too concentrated. Using less water makes the cup more concentrated, not milder.

White Gold: how sweet is the pack you’re buying?
White Gold isn’t a shortcut to choosing a sugar-free coffee. Look at its actual sugar content and ingredient list rather than assuming the name, or a mention of xylitol, tells the whole story.
Pick White Gold if you enjoy the taste. If sugar or allergens matter to your diet, read that specific pack first. Even a creamer labelled non-dairy can need a closer look at the milk-allergen information.

Original black coffee versus Original coffee mix
This is the distinction that catches people out: Original black instant coffee and Original sweetened coffee mix are different things. Look for agreement between the product name, photo and ingredient list. If you want to add your own milk and sugar, choose a clearly labelled plain coffee.

Arabica 100 coffee mix
“Arabica 100” helps you find the product line, but it doesn’t tell you whether the pack includes sugar or creamer. Read the format and ingredients first. A small box is a sensible way to find out whether you prefer its flavour to your usual Maxim coffee.

Which Maxim coffee should you try first?
- For convenience: a pre-mixed stick gives a consistent starting point.
- For control: plain coffee lets you adjust milk and sweetener separately.
- For iced coffee: dissolve the powder in a small amount of hot water, then add cold water or milk and ice to taste.
- For value: compare the delivered cost per stick and the amount in each stick, not just the box price.
Caffeine content is product-specific. Don’t assume every Maxim product contains the same amount, and distinguish decaffeinated products where available. This article doesn’t measure caffeine or establish suitability for a medical diet.
